Living life like it's golden

By Yvette Ervin, My Salon Scoop guest writer

Recently, I have been so taken away with my fast-and-furious lifestyle of doing it all. As a fledging entrepreneur, international model and soon-to-be published author, I work hard. However, being a success doesn't just mean making money and good PR. It also means doing great things, and making them look effortless.

Rule No. 1 in my playbook — Look fab when things are good and when they're not so good.

As an international model for most of my adult life, I am used to using my hair as a vehicle. It was a way for companies who contracted my services to sell their brands.

But for the past year, I let my guard down chasing business and had found myself choosing the "anything goes" attitude when it came to my hair. Then one day staring in the mirror, I realized I needed a ‘do that complemented my current lifestyle. Up until then, I had been letting my hair determine my mood, attitude and disposition. I was spending up to two hours a day doing my hair. It was taking over my life. I had had enough.

There's a quote by Maya Angelou that says, "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude."1 Maya was on to something. So I took her advice, and changed my attitude.

I enjoyed working out. I had begun running three miles daily. My body was responding beautifully to the new regimen, but my hair was taking a beating. I needed a quick, easy, fly hairstyle that was just as chic and sexy as the high-maintenance ‘dos I was used to rocking. I mean if I'm going to be a high-flying seven-figure entrepreneur (I'm on my way there!), I needed to look the part and have it look effortless.

So, I called my stylist and had her cut off my hair— relaxer and all — to give me back my crowning glory. Child, life is too short and my life is too ready for an upgrade to worry about putting a flat iron to my hair. I now sport a short, chic and sexy style with a warm caramel color to spice it up. I like to call the color Chai tea. My natural hair texture comes through the closer I get to the scalp. I love this!

I first wondered if my new hairstyle would be sexy enough, feminine enough. Would it look great in photos? Would it allow me to do me? Oh baby does it ever! One thing is for sure, this style takes a confident woman who holds her own in a world of "hair-hair" to pull this look off. And as I look in the mirror, I know I have just what it takes.

At first, my new look was a bit shocking for others. They saw it as a bold move. For me, it was just what the naturopath ordered. I just love it. This is third time in my life that I've cut all my hair off. I now realize it's a signal alerting me when a drastic life transformation is about to happen. Now, I can't wait to experience what's ahead for me. In the meantime, I'm living life like it's golden.
