Best at-home picks a toss up

As winter rides up our coattails, our wardrobe isn't the only important switch needed for a chilly transition. Our hair—whether we wear it relaxed or natural—needs maximum moisturizing products to protect it during this frosty season.
To help you make the product switch, here are a few picks for your at-home styling arsenals:
J Beverly Hills Platinum Treatment
Moisturizing products
Salon Stylist Robin Dove of Ground Zero Hair Salon in Philadelphia recommends "J Beverly Hills" Platinum Treatment, as a staple winter product. She said the product is a combination feature that fortifies hair from the damaging winter breezes.
"It's a three-in-one system," she said. "The first part is the repair treatment, which is the oil that goes onto the scalp. What that does is help with dry scalp. Then we have the second part, which is the purity shampoo. The third part is the nourishing conditioner."
Dove explained that the nourishing conditioner closes the hair cuticle and simultaneously treats the hair with proteins and moisture.
Contrary to her product suggestion, hairstylist Deidre Chisholm of Atlanta-based shop Salon 2 E said she doesn't rely on products that claim to treat hair three ways.
"Clients will think they can use (three-in-one conditioners) all the time when they really can't," she said. Hairstylists "know (how they) want their clients hair to feel like when they wash it, but clients being consumers (are) not exactly sure what they're looking for, or what their hair should feel like at home. Sometimes you can't get that with those (three-in-one) products."
Instead, she recommends KeraCare and Design Essentials. She says these products help produce healthy conditioned hair. But if clients really want to make sure their hair is properly conditioned, Chisholm believes they should see a professional.
Though they differ on products, both agree that the best picks are the ones that give your hair its best look and keep it healthy.
Color protection treatments
When it comes to color-treated hair, there is a bit of extra care needed. Stylist Veronica Thomas of Hair On The Move and Ms Tonya's of Hollywood, Calif. recommends a clear cellophane treatment.
"I'm noticing in Southern California we're getting a lot of different (chemicals) in the hair, and with wearing color those different elements in the hair tend to dry the hair out," she said.
Clear cellophane or a color shine, she said, is a great way to protect your hair from the weather as well as from styling wear and tear. She explained that the conditioning elements of the cellophane coat the hair, which keeps it moisturized.
So stock up on moisturizing conditioners and check in with your stylists to ensure your hair stays soft and supple this season.
