Dr. Kari Williams, trichologist and salon owner
Great service, great philosophyBy Ricki Jae Morris, My Salon Scoop writerLOS ANGELES—Integrity and humility are the key elements that set Mahogany Hair Revolution apart from all the rest. The hair-nistas who come here know that the health and care of their tresses will never be compromised.
"Our main goal is to make sure every client is pleased," said Dr. Kari Williams, a trichologist, chief creator and designer of the Los Angeles-based salon in reference to the philosophy behind the customer service of her salon.
Recently, her client Dominique Reese nominated Williams and Mahogany Hair Revolution to My Salon Scoop as an example of a stellar salon with stellar service. Of the salon, Reese stated in her letter, "The venue was serene and calming to my senses, I was greeted and welcomed with an experience, not just an appointment."
"It's great to know we've been nominated. We can't make everyone happy, but we do our best," Williams said.
One thing that makes this salon a true gem is that Williams is a board-certified trichologist, which is the scientific study of hair and scalp disorders.
"I didn't want to be your normal stylist," she said. "I went online and researched it, found out what it was, and researched how (to) become (a trichologist).

With this background, Williams is able to treat scalp conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, hair loss, breakage, thinning, and dry, oily or itchy scalp to name a few.
After obtaining the knowledge, she opened Mahogany Hair Revolution to allow her to cater to women experiencing these conditions and to teach all of her clients how to take better care of their hair naturally.
"The idea originated out of my skill for natural hairstyling including braiding, twisting and locking," Williams said about the shop. She wanted "to bring back the idea that you can wear your hair in those styles and still be elegant...and professional."
In addition to being a hair styling beacon, she also provides nonsurgical hair replacement. "I customize nonsurgical (hair pieces), particularly for...people who have hair loss due to chemotherapy or alopecia. I custom make these pieces just for them."
According to Reese's letter, this is one of the things that truly impressed her. Williams offers clients "well-lit private vanities so they can try on their wigs without being the center of attention to other patrons." This way, Reese wrote, "one (can) explore the products with no shame or embarrassment." Williams also offers her own line of wigs named after her mother, Ann Carol.
Because of the popularity of her first salon, Williams opened a second salon called Mahogany Too. This salon caters to clients who want straightening, weaving and chemical services. "Both salons are in the same courtyard. I like having the two separated—not mixing the two practices—because they are very different."
