Masculine hairstyles headline on the runwaysBy Ricki Jae Morris, My Salon Scoop writerThe hottest new looks coming off the runway from Fashion Week this year were strong, bold, short and androgynous. They were masculine-inspired looks borrowed from Josephine Baker and even some with a hint of ‘80s hip-hop flavor.
Among the styles getting the most buzz is the Dandy.
"It's a masculine hairdo with a feminine twist," explains hairstylist Marlon Clayton of X'tacy Salon in Inglewood, Calif. He says the masculine part of the hairstyle is all in the cut, but the feminine presents itself in the texture.
The name of the hairstyle usually doesn't pop out to many, but the celebrities rockin' the ‘do are definite trendsetters.
His clients "don't know (the style) as (the) ‘Dandy.' They show me pictures of Rihanna, Cassie, or Kate Moss and say" this is what they want, Clayton says.
Another popular look rippin' the streets from the runways is the "Josephine Baker" look. Clayton says he's been using this hairstyle for two years, but it's just now getting some real chatter.
"It (took) some time to catch on," Clayton says, adding that he likes to use this look as an alternate for a style that requires less heat. "I don't like to put a lot of heat in my clients hair. So, I will give them like a wet set with a Josephine Baker finger wave, and it looks so sexy."

Another androgynous style is the wet look.
"(It's) a blunt haircut (you) slick down. (You) can put a part on the side and kind of flare it out on the sides," Clayton describes.
Bold styles like the Dandy, the Josephine Baker, and the wet look are made for women who live on the edge. Clayton says he loves recommending these styles to women who are in the spotlight because they are styles that need to be seen. "Somebody's just got to be bold enough to rock it."
He added that when singer Cassie rocked the style with the side of her head shaved, she became the talk of the town and "the" look his clients had to have. Not only did the look surprise him, but his clients also blew him away when they asked for etched designs like hearts and bubbles-looks worn back in the ‘80s.
"Nowadays, women are so free to do whatever they want with their hair," Clayton says. "If you're bold enough to rock it and rock it right, then go for it."
