Salon coach gives tips for best 'first-time' salon experience

By Miki Wright, salon coach and master stylist

Q. What are the top five questions a first-time client should ask to ensure that both the client and the stylist achieve the goal of a great hairstyle experience on the first visit?

A. The best way to start is to look at the experience as the possible beginning of a relationship or partnership with the common goal being a "great hairstyle experience," and not a hair inquisition. With that in mind:

  1. Is the stylist's flair for hair a good fit for me? It's always helpful to view some of the stylist's work to see if it's the type of styling you envision. Of course, it's easier if you've been referred by a friend or have seen one of the stylist's clients and admired her hair. If not, ask to see photos of the stylist's work. It's not a common practice for stylists to build a portfolio, so not all stylists will have it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
  2. Should we talk about my hair before my first visit? You should expect to receive a consultation so the potential stylist can find out about your hair, concerns, lifestyle, all medications you're currently taking, how often you'd like to come into the salon, what you're willing to do at home in-between visits, and the type of style you hope to wear. Such a consultation may have a fee. Be sure to check ahead of time. Ask the stylist what he/she would recommend for your hair. This way you see if the two of you are heading in the same style direction. If not, continue to ask questions to help you both obtain a clearer understanding on what you hope to achieve before the stylist touches your hair.
  3. What's the time commitment for each service? If time is an issue for you, ask how long the services take and if there are certain times during the day and during the week that would be better for getting in and out without a long wait.
  4. What's required to keep this new style looking good? Before you get a hairstyle, ask the stylist how much upkeep is necessary and types of style accessories (products, tools, techniques, etc.) you'll need to take care of your new style at home. Once you get your style, ask the stylist what's the best way to keep your style looking fresh.
  5. Share your hair history. This isn't a question, but be prepared to share any past challenges you've had with your hair as well as all salon services you've had-types of relaxers, other chemical services, color including "rinses," weaves, etc. In addition, also share a little of your personal medical history in the last year. Things like hospitalization, chemotherapy, pregnancy, same-day surgeries involving anesthesia, etc. can affect your hair. This may seem invasive, but it's important to help the stylist get to the root of discovering the best healthy hair regimen for you.

I have been letting a friend do my hair and now she seems to not have the time. I have short hair and it looks like it has never been combed now. Nappy looking, I can't put my own perms in because I have arthritis in my arms and it hurts to hold my hand up. I look like a scared chicken.

What to do???
written by mrscoachd, May 08, 2010
I love to change my hair styles so, I LOVE my weaves! I use the net method as a way to get the look I want without damaging my natural hair. But I've noticed the areas where my natural hair is out (edges and a portion of the top of my head) are breaking and damaged. I don't know what to do to re-grow my hair and make it healthy again, even when I ware my weaves.
Help please!
