Short cuts, world of curls flatter mothers on wedding day

By Terri Huggins, My Salon Scoop writer

When it comes to the mother of the bride, her look should be elegant, youthful, classic, yet not upstage the bride. Stylists from coast to coast chime in on looks that range from face-flattering short cuts and tight chignons to worlds of curls worn loose or in a variety of buns.

New York, N.Y.
Patrick Wellington, stylist and owner of Wellington Hair Spa says that his clients are avoiding over-the-top up-dos and sticking to styles that accentuate the face. "If everyone in the bridal party has an up-do, they will all start looking like the bride."

Instead, Wellington leans toward giving mothers a fresh cut that shapes the face, or going with long, flowing tresses.

"Bringing out the face shape is very flattering," he said. "It's a good idea to style the hair more toward the face to make it look less square."

For mothers going for a simplistic and elegant look, Wellington suggests a classic chin-length bob.

Washington, D.C.

Latrice Strader, master stylist and owner of Destiny De'Ve Salon & Spa uses the mother's personality and dress to find an age-appropriate style.

"Classic looks that never go out of style always work well," she said. "You can't go wrong with pinned-up spiral curls, long tresses, or a nice classic bob."

Strader doesn't suggest mothers get a detailed cut just for her daughter's big day. However, she does favor a pixie cut on shorthaired women. She also suggests the style doesn't stray too far from her everyday look.

"I believe that the personality of the mother of the bride should be considered when creating the style for this special occasion. She should also wear a formal style to compliment the ceremony," Strader said.

San Francisco, Calif.
Lindsey Olsen, bridal expert of Milvalli Salon, said simple styles are all the rage in California. "Hairstyles that look effortless are in right now."

Depending on what they are wearing, Olsen's choice styles involve low, loose buns with curls, pinned-up curls or wearing half of the hair up and half of it down. However, she tries not to style the hair up too often as it can overshadow the bride.

"Nothing too modern or busy," she said.

Atlanta, Ga.
Keneesha Hudson, curly hair expert and salon owner of Urbanella, believes that anything goes when it comes to styling the mother of the bride. When styling her, Hudson aims for something that will stand out, but not upstage the bride.

"They don't want to wear the same look they wear everyday to work," she said. "Give (the style) some more pizzazz on the glamour side of things. Mothers like to look beautiful and youthful."

However, Hudson notes that it could be difficult to find a special hairdo for curly hair types that don't take away from the bride. "Curly hair takes the stage so you want it to look a little tamed."

Hudson notes that a taut bun taking up the whole crown of the head is a favorite among mothers with curly hair. She also suggests Bantu Knots or using two-strand twists to reset the hair texture.

This is really a gret article. It provides a host of ideas for the 'Mother-of-Bride' when it comes to her do. Based her peronality, facial structure and hair texture, the brides mother can use this article as a guide to new 'do' when that special day comes around. All that is left s selecting that hairdresser that will execute the style accordingly.
Thi is some great advice!
