Short cuts, world of curls flatter mothers on wedding dayBy Terri Huggins, My Salon Scoop writerWhen it comes to the mother of the bride, her look should be elegant, youthful, classic, yet not upstage the bride. Stylists from coast to coast chime in on looks that range from face-flattering short cuts and tight chignons to worlds of curls worn loose or in a variety of buns.

Instead, Wellington leans toward giving mothers a fresh cut that shapes the face, or going with long, flowing tresses.
"Bringing out the face shape is very flattering," he said. "It's a good idea to style the hair more toward the face to make it look less square."

Washington, D.C. Latrice Strader, master stylist and owner of Destiny De'Ve Salon & Spa uses the mother's personality and dress to find an age-appropriate style.
"Classic looks that never go out of style always work well," she said. "You can't go wrong with pinned-up spiral curls, long tresses, or a nice classic bob."
Strader doesn't suggest mothers get a detailed cut just for her daughter's big day. However, she does favor a pixie cut on shorthaired women. She also suggests the style doesn't stray too far from her everyday look.
"I believe that the personality of the mother of the bride should be considered when creating the style for this special occasion. She should also wear a formal style to compliment the ceremony," Strader said.

Depending on what they are wearing, Olsen's choice styles involve low, loose buns with curls, pinned-up curls or wearing half of the hair up and half of it down. However, she tries not to style the hair up too often as it can overshadow the bride.

"Nothing too modern or busy," she said.

"They don't want to wear the same look they wear everyday to work," she said. "Give (the style) some more pizzazz on the glamour side of things. Mothers like to look beautiful and youthful."
However, Hudson notes that it could be difficult to find a special hairdo for curly hair types that don't take away from the bride. "Curly hair takes the stage so you want it to look a little tamed."
