Novels, catwalks and ‘old' Hollywood inspire stylistsBy Ricki Jae Morris, My Salon Scoop writerThis season brides say "I do" to romantically versatile hair that can be elegantly pinned in a curly up-do for the wedding ceremony then unpinned for loose curls to bounce freely during the foot-stomping reception.
"It's messy, but controlled at the same time," says Marlon Clayton, a hairstylist based at X'tacy Salon in Inglewood, Calif.
The hairstyle is very reminiscent of the character "Fabio" in the romance novels. "They want to look like they are on a cover of a novel," Clayton says. "They want to look like they are (Fabio's) girl.
While Clayton's eye may be on romance novels, Jackie Almond, a stylist at Pizazz Salon & Spa on Lennox Avenue in the New York City community of Harlem, says fashion catwalks galvanize her wedding style inspiration.
"(My) inspiration comes from Fashion Week's...spring trends," says Almond, whose wedding styles are featured on ChocolateBrides.com.
Her preferred wedding look is an elegantly layered bun. It starts off as roller sets, and then she sculpts from there. She explains that the roller set is a method that provides style flexibility.

Bella Shahmordian, designer and salon/spa owner of Bella Nella Bride in California, recommends taking looks from the past romantic Hollywood eras.
"The 1950s ‘Pin Up Girl' is one of the hottest hair looks for a bride," Shahmordian says. "The 1940s Hollywood glamour looks are always popular for brides. They are more glam than ever and...(are) amazing on brides who are going for a sophisticated look. You can either wear hair all down or in a loose up-do."
Stylists agree that while trends help guide brides to beautiful looks, the real look should reflect your personality and personal styles.
"When you find which (style) best describes your personality...collect photos from magazines, Internet...to show what you like," Shahmordian recommends.
Newlywed Raven Hennington-Billberry, a guest service manager of Burke Williams Day Spa in Los Angeles, says her wedding gown inspired her marital coif.
Bride Raven Hennington-Billberry chose soft flowing curls to complete her look.
"(Because) my dress was strapless, I wanted my hair to be partially up; and because my back was out, I wanted something that was long and hanging, too," she says.
At the end of the day "remember, be open to your hairdresser's ideas and have confidence and trust. He/she is the expert after all," Shahmordian says.
