Pro says bride's style vision should win in the end

Q. Being a wedding hair specialist, what is your process for helping the bride pick out the best ‘do for her big day?

A. I always sit down with the bride for a full consultation first. I ask her to either bring in the dress or a picture of the dress. I inquire about the wedding theme as well as ask her a few questions to get to know her personality. If she were very conservative, I wouldn't want to give her an over-the-top style. The bride's personality really goes into every up-do I create. From there, I suggest some styles.

Q. When picking the "'do" for the big day, why is it a good idea that the bride consider her veil and dress?

A. It's a good idea to have the bride bring in ALL of the accessories because you want the hairstyle to be in total harmony with the dress, veil and hairpiece. If the bride has a conservative style, then maybe we can go with an elaborate headpiece, but everything (including the hair) must be in "harmony" with each other, and the bride's accessories helps determine the outcome.

Q. What hairstyles go with what facial shapes?

A. In the case of a wedding, you have to consider the dress as well as her facial shape. The ideal face shape is oval. So, the idea is to create a hairstyle that will give the illusion of an oval face. For example if the bride has a round face, but wearing an A-line dress, then a half up, half down style would work well because you can place tendrils and loose curls around the face to give the illusion of the oval face shape. Since you must consider both, the hairstyle possibilities are endless!

Q. What should one look for in picking a stylist for your wedding day?

A. Look for a wedding hairstylist who asks about your wedding gown's neckline. This is a sign that the stylist knows what style goes with what dress. Check the stylist's portfolio. All wedding hairstylists who are specialists will have one. Choose a stylist who is open to criticism and who really takes your vision seriously. After all, it is your day. The stylist should be knowledgeable enough to make suggestions, but also know how to make your vision for your hair come alive.
