Pros pick products keeping summer 'do shiny, gorgeous
By Sherrell Dorsey, My Salon Scoop writerTurning away from the once tried-and-true braids to manage hair during the heat, clients and stylists turn toward in-season chic trends to inspire natural ‘do looks. Trendy and oh so summer chic Glen Ettienne, stylist and owner of De Lux Gallery Inc. in Brooklyn, N.Y. notices that many of his clients are going for short cuts or full shaves, especially clients looking to transition from relaxed hair. "Clients are requesting cuts with color or half-head cuts with designs or hair tattoos." Solange Knowles and Chrisette Michelle are among celebrities who have all taken the "BC," or big chop lately. But for those not ready to take that route, Ettienne suggests double-stranded twists, which can be separated to create curly Afros or very curly straw sets.

"Depending on the length of your hair, an up-do is always an option for a cute hairstyle that can fit in any setting," says Taliah Waajid, natural hair care specialist and founder of the Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Care Center and the World Natural Hair, Beauty and Health Show in Atlanta, Ga. "I suggest you purchase several decorative hair clips as well to compliment your up-do." Keep natural hair hydrated Healthy, hydrated hair is also important to keeping natural summer looks sleek and shiny. To manage natural tresses, Ettienne recommends Jane Carter's Nourish and Shine hair cream. It's perfect for adding shine and repairing dry hair. "A daily moisturizing spray is one of the most important steps for achieving and keeping healthy hair," Waajid advises. She suggests using Protective Mist Bodifier from her line of natural hair products called Black Earth. Getting the look in the salon or at home
