Moisturized, detangled hair essential for curly look

By Terri Huggins, My Salon Scoop writer

Lazy days spent poolside mean its time to step away from the flat iron and turn toward the swim cap. However once splash time is over and busy schedules set in, a wash-‘n'-go style may be the perfect solution for a difficult wet-hair situation.

World of curls
Celebrity stylist and founder of the Hair Rules Salon in New York, N.Y., Dickey sites a set of defined curls as a great wash ‘n' go style for all curl patterns.

"All kinky, curly, or wavy textures can easily pull of this look in a matter of minutes," he said. "That's the great thing about wash ‘n' go."

Candace Kelley, creator of the hair care line Curly Prep Natural Solutions and The Follicle Chronicles, agrees. "It's a fun and fresh summer look that doesn't take too much time."

However to achieve the best wash-‘n'-go look, Dickey emphasizes the need to have healthy, well-moisturized hair. Otherwise the hair will look frizzy and break.

"Use a cream-based conditioner with no suds to moisturize the hair," he suggests, adding to try Daily Cleansing Cream from his own Hair Rules product line specifically designed for women with kinky, curly and wavy hair. "Cream-based shampoos and conditioners keep the hair softer and less frizzy."

Creating the look also requires detangling with a wide-tooth comb after applying conditioner.

"Using a large-tooth comb in the shower to detangle is ideal because it prevents breakage and also makes the hair more manageable while detangling," he said.

Once detangled, Dickey advises the application of a curly styling product such as Hair Rules Kinky Curling Cream to soaking wet hair in sections while in the shower. The way hair looks while soaking wet is the way it will set when the product is dried into the hair. The hair's thickness determines how much product to use.

Hair Rules Kinky Curly cream enhances curls.
"Thicker hair requires more product applied in more sections," he advised. "You can either work the product through hair with a wide tooth comb or by finger combing to elongate the curls."

Preserving the look
When it comes to preserving a wash ‘n' go style for multiple days, hair-nistas are advised to wear a satin cap or sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.

"Those with longer hair should pin the hair to the top of the crown and then wrap it with a satin scarf around the hairline to preserve the curl," Dickey said.

To freshen up second-day hair, Kelley also advises finger combing, re-shaping and spraying olive oil and water to the hair to reactive the curly styling product.

Although wash-‘n'-go styles can be worn for multiple straight days, Dickey warns not to exceed a certain amount of time because the style can cause damage. Tangling may be a consequence of wearing wash-‘n'-go styles for too long.

"The kinkier the hair, the less days a wash-‘n'-go style should be worn," Dickey said. "Wash-‘n'-go styles shouldn't be worn for more than two and a half to three days by kinky textures. The hair will revert to its natural state and get dry and break if it is worn for longer."

Dickey suggests that after the allotted time for a wash-‘n'-go style has passed its best to wash, rinse and condition hair to restore moisture.
