A-list celebrities on pulse of season's hottest looks

By Sherrell Dorsey, My Salon Scoop writer

Gearing up for fall with a fresh new ‘do can add sizzle to any wardrobe. Dress your tresses and your wardrobe with style and sophistication this season with advice from top stylists from around the country.

Whether your hair is natural or relaxed, stylists give their outlook on the sexy, sleek looks for fall.

Chicago
Stylist A.J Johnson, whose client list includes Tyra Banks, Iman, Jennifer Hudson and other A-list celebrities, notices his clients going for deeper colors and hues to pair with the changing colors of summer into fall.

"I'm seeing everywhere from honey blonds to caramel and mocha," says Johnson, owner of AJES The Salon in Chicago, Ill. whose mission for his clients is to make sure their hair is shiny, rich, moisturized and healthy. "I focus more on healthy hair and hair care versus trend."

His salon specializes in both natural and relaxed hair preferring to roller set all of his clients versus blow drying in order to lock in moisture. As of late, many of his clients have been requesting elevated bobs, edgy razor cuts and cute short styles like Rihanna and Halle Berry.

To help his clients maintain their look at home, Johnson recommends Edge Control by Namaste for sleek and shine and the Macadamia Deep Conditioning Hair Mask as a conditioning treatment.

Florida
Carlos Spencer of Bamboo Hair Studio, a natural hair care salon in Jacksonville, Fla., describes the desired look that his clients are asking for in one word: movement. "Clients don't want a stationary look."

To achieve that look this fall, most of his clients are trading their up-‘dos for free-flowing styles that move in the wind. Those looks include bobs and ponytails that swing.

If a new cut is not what you need, try looking to the cooler colors of like browns and burgundies.

To maintain healthy tresses in the salon and at home, Spencer uses the Bamboo Hair System, a multipurpose hair system with nourishing blends of proteins, vitamins, peppermint, olive oil, mango and other properties that help strengthen the hair with excellent shine and balances moisture.

Philadelphia
Senior stylist Tia Hardy of Duafe Hair Care Salon is already seeing a slight hair shift. As more women transition from relaxers to natural styles by going for the big chop, they also enhance the look with cooler colors like plum, burgundy and chocolate. These same colors are being seen on clients who are staunch Mohawk fans.

Hardy, who is well-versed in natural and relaxed hair, recommends hot oil and steam treatments to hydrate the hair, especially for clients experimenting with color.

"Some clients may be skeptical about adding color, but they are being influenced by each other," she says. "We recommend our clients start with semi-permanent color or rinses to change the hue without making a huge commitment."

To protect the hair, Hardy uses Duafe's Hair and Body Oil suggesting that clients use it once a month as a hot oil treatment.

Los Angeles
Holistic approaches to maintaining beautiful locks are what natural hair specialist and celebrity stylist Felicia Leatherwood recommends for hair-nistas this fall.

"The key to maintaining hydrated hair is all in your diet," she says. "I can immediately tell just by touching my clients' hair that they aren't eating enough of the right things."

The right things include a diet rich in fish like salmon, dark green vegetables like broccoli and collard greens, and lots of legumes. "Our hair is part of us. The condition of our hair is determined by everything that we put in to our bodies,"

Leatherwood, who has styled the locks of Jill Scott, Will Smith, Sanaa Lathan, and the women of Floetry, says that in addition to diet, try using Organic Root Stimulator's Temple Balm.

For hot looks this fall, Leatherwood favors the short curly Afro with a medium-brown hue.
