TV anchor's look visual aid for first-time clientA stylist may ask, "How do you wear your hair?" But, the real question is "Who are you?" On the first salon visit, some hair-nistas worry if the stylist will "get" them.
After Denise's inaugural lean back in the bowl, she heads to the stylist's chair to have the "talk" about styling preferences. On the walk back to the chair, Denise tries to rehearse in her mind how to describe her style, but comes up blank.
She hopes her clothes will speak volumes. Denise sports a sky blue Banana Republic dress with coordinated pattern-printed sandals. It took her 20 minutes to coordinate her outfit because she wanted to say, "I am stylish, yet elegant" through her clothes. She hoped Raquel, her new stylist, would translate this to mean she is stylish and elegant about her hair.
As soon as Denise places her purse comfortably on her lap, the million-dollar question comes. "How do you wear your hair," Raquel asked.
"I just kind of wear it curled under," Denise responded.
"What about trying something different like some spiral curls and some color in the front? You can try a streak of blue in the front like Rihanna is sporting now," Raquel suggested.
Denise looked at herself in the mirror with her stylish, but unapologetically corporate chic ensemble and then looked up at Raquel. "That doesn't sound quite like something I could wear at my job."
"Well, how do you want me to style your hair?" Raquel was completely puzzled.
Denise gazed up at the local news on TV and admired one of the anchors. Denise replied, "I usually rock a Lori Stokes or Rosanna Scotto kind of look. I guess my style is more ‘news anchor basic.'"
Raquel tried to visualize what she could do with Denise's hair. She really wanted to try out her new blue demi-color so she pressed the color issue again. "You sure you don't want to try the color?"
"I am definitely sure," Denise said. "Would Lori rock blue hair?"
"News anchor. All right, I get it," Raquel laughed. Denise walked out the salon camera-ready for the 6 o'clock news.
