Friends help professional up her style gameCamille sat down confident and poised for her job interview with hair and clothes that said sophistication — period. Finally, her look matched the wealth of experience detailed on her resume. As she waited for the interviewer, she silently thanked her friends for the much needed salon intervention.
Two days earlier...
Camille rushed to meet her girlfirends at a hair salon near her favorite restaurant. The ladies had made plans for dinner. Last to arrive, Camille had just finished perusing the latest job interview guides at the bookstore. She hoped her hair salon diva friend, Tamika, would be ready to roll out by the time she got there.
Camille dashed through the door and saw Tamika still in the chair. "I knew it," Camille sighed. As she walked closer, armed with a smart comment about Tamika always being late, Tamika slid out of the chair. Her other friend Melani joined Tamika around the stylist's chair. The two friends and the stylist stood smiling warmly at Camille.
"Camille, my friend, we have something to tell you," Tamika started.
"Are you trying to get something else done to your hair," Camille interupted. "I'm starving."
Tamika turned to Melani and sighed. Melani sensed Tamika may be having a moment of weakness. "Girl," Melani said, "we love you but we need to tell you something about your hair that may be hard to hear."
"What are you talking about," Camille asked. She turned to check herself out in the mirror. Camille knew she was no hair diva. For years she's struggled to find the right products to manage her hair texture and had kind of given up. She really didn't get her friends' obsession with going to the hair salon. Camille looked into the mirror and noticed her hair looked like she just gone through a Beyonce wind tunnel without the glitter and background dancers.
Melani continued with one hand on Camille's shoulder, "You are so together on paper, but your hair doesn't reflect how fabulous you are."
The stylist, who could have been Patti LaBelle's twin, agreed. "Girlfriend, your hair needs some help if you wanna get that big time job that you're after."
Tamika sensed that Camille was about to read "Ms. Patti," so she grabbed some hair magazines. "I think you would look really polished if you tried something like this."
"Or maybe this style," Melani chimed in from the pages of another magazine.
Camille looked at her friends and the styles they were showing her. Then, she slowly looked at her head once more. Realizing they were right, she picked up one of the magazines. A cute style caught her eye. Very polished. Sophisticated. Interview ready. "Maybe something like this?"
Her friends nodded their heads in approval. "That would be cute on you," Tamiika said.
"I like it," Melani said. "But with a bigger bang."
Camile nodded as if trying to get comfortable with the oncoming change. "OK," she finally said.
The stylist draped her smock around Camille and headed to the bowl. Camille tagged after her with her friends on either side. She smiled slyly at them. "And I thought we were just going to get something to eat," she said still a little dazed by the apparent salon intervention.
"When you get that new job, you can take us out to a real dinner," Tamika said. "Right now, why don't you let us treat you to a makeover."
Camille sat down in the chair and leaned back into the bowl with hopes for a new hairstyle and a new job.
