Rocky roller set forces client, stylist to split waysOn blind dates, as well as first hair salon appointments, no one wants surprises.
Desperate for a salon appointment, Vicki found herself in a pinch. Her stylist of five years, Rowena, unexpectedly needed to take a personal hiatus. Vicki needed to use the evening to prepare for a business trip so she hoped to have someone else do her hair.
Since she did not to have time to call around for a friend referral, Vicki asked her old stylist for a recommendation. "Why don't you just go back to Apples Salons where I used to work," Rowena asked. "I am sure anyone there could do your hair."
Remembering she really enjoyed her past visits at Apples because of its luxurious trimmings, Vicki considered the option. The owner equipped the salon with high-end dryers, fancy washing bowls and grand décor. Can't go wrong with a wash and roller set, now can I, she asked herself as she dialed their number.
When Vicki walked in for her appointment, she noticed the salon was empty. It was Tuesday, so Vicki wasn't alarmed. She only saw a young blonde sitting in the receptionist area who looked more like someone who rolled towels not hair. Although Apples serviced a multicultural clientele, the owner and stylists had always been women of color.
"Hi, I'm Vicki. I have an appointment at 6:30." Vicki said looking around. "Is my stylist here?" Maybe my stylist is just running late, she thought.
After an awkward moment, Susie answered. "I'll be your stylist tonight. My name is Susie. Follow me."
"Oh, OK Susie," Vicki hesitantly answered. Her gut screamed for her to just leave, but not wanting to seem rude or presumptive, Vicki followed the young woman to the bowls. Maybe the young woman is just new, Vicki thought. Besides, Rowena has never steered me wrong.
As Susie secured the fresh towel around Vicki's neck to begin the shampoo, Vicki asked, "You seem kind of young. Do you have experience working with my hair texture?"
"Don't worry," Susie said smiling. "I was trained in all types of hair."
After washing Vicki's hair, Susie led her back to her station to set her hair with rollers. As she began the roller set, Susie grabbed a bottle of leave-in conditioner. She sprayed a few short tentative bursts, then paused and slowly combed Vicki's hair.
Vicki sensed that a 10-minute activity might take an hour at this rate. "I think you may have to put a little more of the setting lotion in my hair before you roll it," Vicki said.
Embarrassed, Susie said, "I actually have only done a few roller sets since I started at Apples. Do you mind if I just blow out your hair?"
"Uh, yes, I kind of do. I'm trying to keep a lot of heat off my hair." Tension-filled silence filled the room. The rookie attempt at the roller set prompted Vicki to ask, "Would you know how to wrap me in the ‘doobie' technique after the roller set?"
"Doobie technique?" Susie racked her brain, but drew a blank. "I'm not sure what that is," Susie finally answered.
Stalemate. Uncomfortable and really not trusting her stylist, Vicki got up. "You know. I think I just want to stop at the wash tonight."
"I can do your roller set," Susie said emphatically. "It's no problem, really."
"I am sure you will eventually learn how to do a fabulous roller set, but I do not want to be your test head," Vicki said gently. "No offense, but why did the manager even assign you to my appointment," Vicki asked while wrapping a dry towel around her head.
"The owner wanted me to get some more practice with roller sets so she thought this appointment would be good match for me," Susie said.
Vicki stood with her head wrapped in a towel as Susie watched helplessly with an empty cape in hers. Vicki chuckled. "Well, not exactly an eHarmony connection, huh?"
Susie laughed in spite of herself. "No. Not at all." SUBMIT YOUR OWN MY SALON DRAMA STORY

Recently I had my hair done it was beautiful a full weave. I paid $250.00 Less than 24 hours later my entire back track started to come out. I made an appointment to the same "weaveologist" to have it repaired. I got to the salon and she left me sitting for more than an hour and never called me to the chair. I left that salon and needless to say I will never be returning. I will tell every woman I know NEVER to go to that salon!!! The worse thing you can have is an unhappy client.
