Stylist "connection" should be more than a great dream

After watching the Bronner Brother hair show in the new Chris Rock movie "Good Hair," I thought of a potential new competition. What if the show had an event called "New Stylist Connection" where clients vote on the best stylists?

Imagine...

"Good evening, hair-nistas. I am Shakira Woolery and I am proud to be your host for the New Stylist Connection competition. Our first hair-nista in search of a new stylist is Tia. She is a new mother, describes her hair as ‘needing a little TLC' and says her style mantra as ‘I change styles like an R&B superstar.' Let's welcome, Tia!"

Tia walks out on stage and takes her place next to Shakira ready to watch the finalist videos to judge who could be her perspective new stylist.   "Let's roll the first video," Shakira proclaims.

The first stylist appears twirling scissors in both hands wearing a vibrant red dress and hair flowing in faux wind.   "Hi, Tia. I should be your stylist because I work magic with the shears," she says as she completes her twirling flourish with her scissors. "I can cut hair hanging upside down or even under water. I sculpt hair like clay. I am not just a stylist; I am an artist!"   The stylist punctuates her statement with two snips of her scissors.

"So what do you think," Shakira asks.   "She's interesting, but I'm not sure how that cutting hair under water would work," Tia says.

"Let's see the next stylist," Shakira says.

The second stylist appears with background dancers and individuals moving props around.   "Hi, Tia. I can give you a hairstyle that you will remember for the rest of your life. I can bring you from average chick to R&B wonder woman in 30 minutes. I have styled stars like Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and two out of five of the Real Housewives of Atlanta," the stylist says with swagger.   "I book six months in advance, but I promise I will be worth the wait," he adds with a smile.   "

Is No. 2 your new stylist," Shakira inquires.

"He sure does sound exciting," Tia says with a little lilt in her voice. "But, I'd like to get my hair done before the New Year."

Shakira nods in total understanding. "Well, we have one more video for you."

The screen changes to show the third stylist sitting peacefully in his salon chair with a row of products in the background.   "Hi Tia, you just found your new stylist. I have what is known as "the growing hands," he says raising his hands so Tia can inspect his palms. "I can take your hair from your ear to your rear without adding tracks. Whatever kind of hair texture you have, I have a bottle behind me that will work wonders for you."

Tia grimaces with the thought of having to make a decision on the spot. Shakira turns to Tia and says, "Who will it be?"

Backstage, the three finalists confidently wait for Tia's verdict.   Given one minute to choose, Tia thinks about her hair goals and finally makes a decision. "I will go with stylist No. 3."

With the announcement, the third stylist strolls out on the stage taking a bow. Shakira presents the third stylist with a trophy, which is in the shape of an appointment book, and gives him a congratulatory embrace.

"We will check back with you and Tia in six months to see if you get to still keep the trophy for keeping her happy with her hair," Shakira reminds him.

In a surprise move, Tia removes her wig revealing short frazzled hair. The stylist gasps in fright. Tia beams. "Let's see what those ‘growing hands' can really do!"

"I love a challenge," responded the stylist to Tia.  "But I am not a miracle worker," he whispered under his breath.
