Stylist helps youthful client battle time gracefullyWhen the first gray hair appears, many women fight that telltale sign of aging with creative tucking, or even plucking the poor hairs out. Sometimes, hairstylists have to break the sad truth that the one visible gray hair usually means it has several friends.
Ayana, who is three months shy of her 35th birthday, had become accustomed to seeing a stray gray hair here and there, but thought it wasn't really noticeable. "I look young...a few silver strands will not hold me back from my fabulousness."
Or so she thought. Cherene, Ayana's stylist, had noticed the gray for the last six months. Cherene had been gentle with her counsel about a color rinse because she didn't want to appear too pushy.
Each time she said something, Ayana brushed the comments aside. "Not this time," she continued stroking her mane, "I don't think it's that noticeable."
Cherene would sigh and give her client a knowing smile. She wondered how Ayana could ignore the glistening silver strands bursting through her otherwise deep chocolate locks.
On this latest visit, however, Cherene noticed that Ayana's coif had silver streaks around her hairline and cascading through her crown. It was time for a stronger gray intervention.
"Girl, I have to tell you that you have a head full of gray hair now," Cherene said while visually inspecting Ayana's hair. "I know you think of me as a gardener but I can better control your gray weeds if you let me try a color rinse."
Ayana, not anticipating such candor, looked up in disbelief. Those were borderline fighting words. "Are you serious?"
"Yes. I'm sorry to be so direct, but I know we have discussed trying a rinse for over six months now," Cherene said. "The gray is seriously taking over." She held up a big mirror for Ayana to see the silver dandelions throughout her hair.
"I know that I am fighting the hands of time," Ayana said begrudgingly. "I think actress Della Reese has a gorgeous silver mane, but I am not quite ready for that."
"Of course, you still do not have to try a color today. However, as your stylist I wanted you to know that we can take care of the gray and give you back that Queen Latifah Oscar radiance," Cherene said.
"OK, you are cleaning it up now after knocking me out with the real talk about my gray," Ayana chuckled.
"You can continue to prune, Ayana, but I would like to try chemicals on these resistant strands," Cherene said, smiling. "So what will it be?"
"Give me color, girl," Ayana said reaching out for the color chart of options. With that decision, Ayana declared one small victory over Father Time. Has this ever happened to you, or do you have a different salon drama to tell? Share your story with us... SUBMIT YOUR OWN "MY SALON DRAMA" STORY
