Hair bet finds stylist shampooing for a week

Deborah had been natural for almost five years. For the last few months, she had discovered that her hair could wash 'n' go quite nicely in a curly style that barely hit her shoulder in length. It was cute, but she needed a new look. She was planning a rather large party for several of her law firm's clients and wanted to rock a sleek and sophisticated blow out.

She had salon-hopped over the years never really finding a place that suited her. As of late, she had watched women at her neighborhood salon walk in with curly hair and walk out with gorgeous blow outs. Believing this could be the answer to her hair prayer, Deborah goes to the salon. A colorful sign on the door warmly greets her: "Walk-ins Welcome."

Women of every ethnicity and hair texture pack the styling chairs. The air smells of peppermint shampoo and burnt hair. Though each stylist has curling irons, the tools they use most are blow dryers and brushes.

"Finally," Deborah thinks, "a salon that speaks my language."

She calmly walks up to the receptionist desk where she glances over the listing of services and prices. A Latina with thick beautiful hair past her shoulders stands in front of her paying her $15 bill.

"Tell Sophie I'll see her next week for another blow out and style."

"OK. Have a good one," said the cherry receptionist with a heavy Spanish accent. "How may I help you?"

"I'd like a blow out and style, too. Do you have someone available?"

"Um, let me check," she said. She walks over to the stylists. A woman with thick beautiful black hair in a blunt cut and ruby red lipstick nods. The receptionist comes back. "Sophie will be your stylist today."

"Oh, great. Thank you," said Deborah, who then walks over to Sophie's station.

Sophie sees Deborah and her coily kinky hair coming. Sophie purses her mouth and quickly tells Deborah she'll be right back. Sophie makes a beeline for the back room where she finds Tonia, the salon owner.

"Tonia," Sophie said all bent out of shape. "Find someone else to do that woman's hair. I am on a roll. I can do six more heads in the next three hours and make my money for the day. Mami over in the chair will slow me down and mess up my money."

Tonia peeks over at Deborah. "Her hair doesn't look that tough," Tonia said.

"Then you do it," Sophie answered.

"OK. If it takes me more than 30 minutes to get her in and out, I'll give you the money. However, if it doesn't, you're my shampoo girl for a week," Tonia said sticking out her pinky.

"You're on," Sophie said giving Tonia a pinky shake.

Twenty-nine minutes later...

Deborah's hair is straight and simply gorgeous. She thanks Tonia profusely. As she leaves, she passes by Sophie who instantly drops her jaw.

"Sophie!" Tonia yells across the salon. "I got a shampoo over here. Chop, chop!"

Another stylist seeing the exchange saddles over to Sophie. "They don't call her the blow out queen for nothing."

"Yeah," Sophie admitted. "She is good."
