Double-digit ‘do boosts self-esteem
Cara watched as her mom finished setting out her outfit to wear to the annual Mother's Day brunch held at the city civic center ballroom. Both she and her mom were going.
"Mama," Cara asked.
"Um, hmm," Yolanda answered loading the dishwasher.
"Can I wear my hair down for the brunch?"
"Aw, baby. I don't think so. Let's just leave it in your cute braids this year," Yolanda said hoping this would suffice.
"I wear braids everyday. And the brunch is special. I want to look...I don't know...different," Cara said sighing.
Yolanda glanced at Cara. Her long braids flopped around her shoulders. It amazed Yolanda just how much Cara had grown up.
"All the girls my age wear their hair down for special occasions. I want to wear my hair down, too," Cara said.
"I see."
"Besides. I am in my double digits."
"And that means?"
"I'm not a baby."
"Oh, really?" Yolanda laughed looking at her daughter's big brown eyes. "Let me call Ms. Riecy and see if she can take both of us."
Cara smiled broadly, and her eyes sparkled with hope as her mom spoke with her hair guru. Riecy could take them both. It was settled. Cara was going to the salon. As she fastened her seatbelt, she listed the types of hairstyles she wanted to try.
Yolanda, however, vetoed them all because the styles were either too grown or involved some type of "extension." So by the time Cara got to the salon, her joy had slightly soured.
Riecy greeted the duo at the door. She could sense the uneasiness in little Cara. "Why don't we take you first," Riecy said to Cara and grabbed her hand to lead her to the wash area.
Yolanda smiled and watched her daughter walk off to begin her first salon visit.
Riecy gently washed Cara's hair while asking her questions about school. Then, she ushered Cara back to her station to blow dry and style her hair.
Cara intently watched Riecy style her hair. Not one braid in sight. Cara beamed. In fact, Cara was amazed that her hair was a lot longer and thicker than she had imagined.
When Riecy looked like she was only a few curls and bumps away from completion of Cara's ‘big girl' hairstyle, Yolanda joined them. "She looks so precious," Yolanda gushed. Cara giggled at the reflection of herself in the mirror.
"Beyonce can't touch this," Cara said enjoying her new style.
The two adults shared a glance and chuckled. "Riecy, it looks like you have a new client," Yolanda said.
