Forgiveness covers cheating friend, unexpected haircut
Faith has always had long, super thick hair. She called it God's gift, a man's eye candy, but at times a stylist's curse. Over the years, she's learned how to work with stylists so they helped her keep her beautiful mane long and luxurious.
This day, Faith was in a jam. She had an important speaking engagement that evening and wanted to wear a simple blow out to match her tailored pantsuit. Her stylist was out of town, but a friend had recommended a new salon where she assured Faith that she'd leave Hollywood ready.
It was nothing for Faith to walk into a salon and feel all the eyes in the spot bore into her in total disbelief. Faith's hair made Angela Davis stand up and applaud.
As she approached, she was blinded by the receptionist's rather loud yellow shirt. A curl cap decorated her head covering the obvious deep-conditioner treatment her hair was undergoing. Taken aback by the unprofessional look, Faith debated whether she should stay when she heard the receptionist rudely ask, "Is that all of your hair?"
Faith fixed her face in a smile totally ignoring the question. "We haven't introduced ourselves. My name is Faith and you are...?"
"Shalanda."
"Nice to meet you Shalanda," Faith said without skipping a beat. "Is anyone available to help me? I'd like a blow out and a trim."
"Oh, let me look," Shalanda said as she poured over the reservation book. Seeing a potential opening, Shalanda peeked around the corner. "Cierra's available."
"Great," Faith said pleasantly.
Shalanda pointed Faith toward Cierra's station. Cierra, who rocked an up-to-date ‘do, gave Faith hope with her warm greeting.
"Hi," Cierra said. "What brings you here today?"
"I'd like a trim and a blow out," Faith said.
"I can do it, but because you have long hair, I'll have to charge you by the length," Cierra said. "It'll be $65."
"That's fine," Faith answered.
Cierra escorted Faith to the shampoo bowl. As she scrubbed and massaged Faith's head, she asked about her hair history and wondered if she had a steady stylist. Faith beamed with pride as she told how her stylist, Miracle, helped grow her hair and keep it healthy.
The mention of Miracle's name, sent shivers down Cierra's spine. She pursed her lips as if she mulled something over in her mind that truly was distasteful. Faith didn't notice Cierra's changed demeanor. As Cierra sat Faith under the dryer, she set the timer for 15 minutes then made a beeline to the back.
Twenty minutes later, Cierra was blow-drying Faith's hair. Try as she might, Cierra couldn't shake the sour taste that coated the inside of her mouth. "So, Miracle is your stylist?"
"Sure is," Faith said with pride. "Kind of a unique name for the area so you might know her."
Cierra cocked an eyebrow as she grabbed the flat iron. "All too well. She's known for taking other stylists' clients."
"And your husband!" Shalanda blurted out of nowhere.
An eerie silence blanketed the salon. Embarrassed, Faith didn't know what to say until she felt her hair burn like unattended hot oil on a stove.
"MY HAIR!!!" Faith screamed.
"Oh, I am so sorry!" Cierra said apologetically. But it was too late. Faith's beautiful mane became an unexpected asymmetrical cut. Both women stared in the mirror in horror. Tears fell from Cierra's eyes.
"Miracle had been my oldest and dearest friend since grade school," Cierra said slouching in a nearby chair. "I just can't forgive her."
Faith took a deep breath then reached out to the crying woman. "Cierra, you've got to learn to let all that madness go. Forgive the woman. Forgive your ex-husband. Then, forgive yourself. ‘Cause girl, the sooner you do, the sooner you can stop this!" Faith said holding her burned tresses in her hand.
"Look, it's all on me. I'll fix it," Cierra said confidently.
"Yes you will ‘cause I forgive you," Faith sighed. "Just, please, don't give me a bob!"
